Neo-Rococo: 'Rococo fancy square justaucorps with frilly jabot' at Viona Art

It is unfortunate how little justice these pictures do to the obviously beautiful garment. It is d delightfully in-between, with the 18th century cut of a justacorps and a modern day (or, alternatively, Dark Ages) use of tartan; I especially approve of the neck ruffle being of the same fabric. Full marks for styling, too.

View this outfit here (under 'Costumes'). The entire site is made of pure gold, in fact; the Portfolio section in particular.

Fail: 'Demon 29 Shoe (Brown)' by Demonia/Pleaser at Pleaser USA

There is a very specific reason to why I list this pair as a Fail, and that is laziness. Execution, quality wise, is good.

I find it extremely lackluster, sticking some vaguely cog-like clutter on an ordinary, modern gothic shoe and making it brown (everything in brass/brown combo is Steampunk, right?) while they're at it, and then calling it Steampunk, riding on the fact that said style is (and has been for a while) a popular style right now. (Besides, they're made of animal skin. Yuck.)

They are forgetting both the Steam and the Punk here. There is no attitude, no quirkiness, no fantasy. And for a company who proudly claims it "not only reflects the alternative lifestyle, it defines it", this is an unimpressive and above all boring performance.

Try to think of something else, Demonia. You do things right, too, sometimes.

Romantic Goth: 'Temptress Collection ~ Samantha' Dress at Enigma Fashions

Slightly Hollywood Goth, this dress, as it bears a remarkable, although stylized, resemblance to a mourning dress of a certain era, and rarely do the goths of real life actually wear anything like this, save for a very special and very gothic occasion. But that aside, I find the ethereal look quite captivating. There is a lot to look at in design and execution both - the shape of those sleeves is beautiful - and as a whole the style and cut are in harmony.

Found here. They seriously need to pay more attention to the pictures as well as the overall layout of their website. Wrong aspect ratios and small, blurry photos? Not. Good.

Mainstream Meets Alternative: 'Scrunchy Arm Top' by James Lillis at Black Milk

This top miraculously avoids appearing cheap and/or frumpy, the judgement usually quickly passed upon any and every shiny garment. There is shape, despite of the looseness, and there is vision, particularly in terms of execution. Goth nouveau?

Classic Goth: 'Forsaken Adulation' Shirt by Heavy Red

Rarely does a slash sleeve shirt look this composed; and the effortless elegance is another commendable feat this shirt pulls. I would never have thought there existed a slash shirt that could be worn with a waist corset, and now I stand corrected.

The surprise of the day found here.

Fail: 'Gothic Punk Bindings 2way Unisex Pants&leather legging' at FanPlusFriend

Slightly wonky, these. Also, the way the details are positioned seems unnecessarily scattered. Some of them are made of leather, too. They are just hanging there on what otherwise appears to be a fairly regular pair of high-waisted trousers. There is no vision, no functionality and no real expertise showcased by the design. Disapproval.

Rarely does this manufacturer disappoint me so.

Cyber: 'Service' Trousers by Futurstate

Oftentimes loosely hanging vertical straps look extremely sloppy and misshapen. With these trousers, however, they would seem to be short and sturdy enough to stay in form, making them quirky instead of embarrassing.

I appereciate the small details in this piece as well as the clean shape, and the use of what seems to be excellent quality material. Alternative trousers need not be cluttered to be interesting, and the less stuff there is, the more flattering the piece is on the wearer.

Fetish/Couture: 'Perestroika' Skirt, Top and Belt by Savage-Wear (2010 Collection)

High concept; nifty, if not perfect, execution; interesting lines and appropriately over-the-top. The model could do a better job, though, I think. This is alternative haute couture, definitely - how come that whenever a piece falls to this category, it is made of latex?

Fail: 'Cleo' Mini Skirt by Phaze at Phoenixx Rising

Augh. The plush toy they skinned to make this garment must have been suffering from some kind of parasites.

Shoddily made, too, but the real issue is that someone out there, somewhere, is of the opinion that this is a perfectly good design. Just let that sink in for a moment and see if you maintain any hope for the future of mankind.

Get yours here!

Neo-Baroque/EGA: Tuxedo Coat by Nubia at Androm

Beautiful, sleek lines, an interesting collar, and nicely cut and proportioned; this coat can only be paired with an outfit that showcases equal elegance and requires thorough planning.

I am tempted to add that were that lacing removed and perhaps replaced with a short back belt, this garment would rise to the, ah, shall we say next level of elegance. That said, the lacing isn't too bad, really, and simply switching to matte ribbon would suffice.

Also I would not suggest wearing any stiff materials with this but rather keep it flowy and light.

Fail: 'Corset Gothic Dress-Black' at Starlets&Harlots

First I was like, "Uh, what?"; then I was like, "Oh no, no no no no," then I was shouting nonsense to the world in particular because I ran out of words to describe how horrendous this rag is.

Please, dear people of the world, do not buy stuff like this. It is badly made, doesn't flatter anybody, lacks shape as well as any basic comprehension of design and fabrics and did-I-mention-how-badly-it's-made aka. Do Not Buy It!
