The Good, the Bad and the Ugly: Capes

Theme: Capes

Good: 'メンズアミュレットケープマント' at Atelier Boz

I have one word for you, and that is control. Just let your eyes feast upon the perfection that is how the hem of this cape folds. The asymmetry brings this out of the obvious and takes it to the effortless elegance of the EGL style. Wear with a top hat, please.

Here. (Also available with red lining.)

Bad: 'Gothic Cape - Deluxe' at ShrineI chose this cape here as a representation more than an individual piece of clothing, because this particular specimen happens to be of fairly good quality. My point in presenting it as Bad is that it is incredibly boring and outdated and a little bit ridiculous if one decides to creep around wearing something like this. Black velvet, full length, red satin lining and a hood? Save it to costumes, people, or other purposes of the kind. This cape is completely overpriced as well, which is unforgivable when there is clearly little to no designing involved in the work.

Found here.

Ugly: 'Gold Cape' at Eye Scry
A question. Would you buy this cape for $250?

Ponder my question here.

Neo-Victorian: 'Steampunk Military Jacket' by Spin Doctor at Violent Delights

There is a lacing in the back that this jacket could as well do without, but it's very clean and subtle and doesn't lessen the allure of the overly symmetrical aesthetics and the interesting way of combining a Victorian silhouette with Rivethead buckles and a military feel that the jacket is displaying so beautifully. Yes, it does say 'Steampunk' in the name, but I think this is too organised and classy for the weirdness and chaos that in my mind make the essentials of Steampunk style.

Gothabilly: 'fgm dolly' Girdle at FairyGothMother

Tagged thusly because of retro feel, but this could be anything, even mainstream. But it sure is classy even with the frills and lace.

Emo? 'Death Row' Shirt by Living Dead Souls at Chaotic Clothing

I don't know exactly what to call this, but relating to being on death row certainly does have an Emo sort of vibe to it, don't you think? It is also a good reminder of what atrocities are still taking place in far too many countries of this day and age. A little bit too loose to be perfect, but that can be seen as a kind of a statement, as well.

Found it here.

Romantic Goth: 'Serre-Taille Gothique Velours et Dentelle' by Sinister at Boutique Gothique Vampirish

Hmm. Why not. It definitely looks like it could be one of the better Romantic Goth cinchers that are out there, but it is impossible to be certain without seeing it on a person.

Found here. (Site in French.)

Geeky: 'Pacman Hoody 5' at Alternategear

More retro game classics! The picture is no good, but out of the five (5) different variations of this Pacman hoody, this one was best. The design in front is pleasantly subtle, if that word can really be used here...

Available here, in various colours.

The Good, the Bad and the Ugly: Flames

(This will be a very low-commentary GBU. Let the fashion speak for itself.)

Theme: Flames

Good: 'Big Flame Boots' by Madfish at PennangalanNot so much 'good' as they are 'as good as you can get with this horrendous theme', the flames here are tolerably well designed. The boots aren't really that attractive, otherwise.

Found here.

Bad: 'Gothic Lolita flame Mary Janes' by Demonia at Drac-in-a-Box
Ehh... not Lolita. Or maybe... no, still not.

Ugly: 'Flame Print Thighs' at Spooky Boutique
Yes, what an excellent idea. Burn them, please.

Eye bleach time.

Fetish: 'Dark Antoinette' Top & Skirt at Heavenly Circus

That boring picture with a bored model does only a relatively small disservice to this outfit (top and skirt). I find this quite interesting and attractive in its own rubbery way, and somehow the slight nod towards that particular era of history suits the fetishist approach to clothes perfectly, perhaps against intuition.

All those elements we see are well under control, and the amount of details does not destroy the ensemble, but all frills and layers stay together. Plus I highly approve of exactly that style of pantyhose with this garment.

Available here (top) and here (bottom), and apparently you can order them in some other colours as well.

Fail: 'Team Satan Pentagram' Hockey T-Shirt by Omen at Attitude Clothing

Ahh, that poor model. They really cannot carry this in the right way; that would require an angst-ridden teenager, definitely without a beard or long hair. This garment is hilarious! Sports and satanic symbols? Hadn't thought of that before.

Tribal Goth: Unnamed Outfit by Christina Molcillo/ Black Lotus Clothing

Striking, daring, and strange in a good way is what I think of this entrie outfit. It's grungy in almost an architectural sense, but I cannot really explain the thought much better. The picture could do with less distraction in the background.

View the outfit(s) in the Black Lotus gallery here. Their shop is located here.

Fail: 'Cotton & Lace L/S Top w/ Laced Panel - Reflection' by StrangeWays at Kinky Angel

I wonder if they will ever stop doing this stuff, but I sure do hope so. It would make the world a little bit bearable.

Oh, and people who buy this stuff? Stop it. Right now. Save your money. Go get something nice for a change.

Here it is. On sale! Hurrah!

Rivethead: 'Long Coat Dark Neo' by Bat Attack at Venomous Clothing

Of course, no one carries this style better than Keanu Reeves. But for any Rivethead out there who feels the call of the Matrix fashion, this is obviously a must. Being in possession of a tall, slim, straight figure helps.

Alternative Accessories: 'ヴェールクラリスシルクハット Veil Claris silk hat' by Baby, the Stars Shine Bright

A lot of stuff going on with the hat, but if it's Gothic Lolita we are talking about, it's not too much. Beautiful! I wouldn't encourage combining this with any other style, though, unless there is a lot of volume in the rest of the outfit as well. (With GL it's usually given.)

Available here.

Geeky: 'Space Invaders' T-Shirt at GrindStore

A true gamer classic done like they used to make video games: minimalistic. Couldn't make a shirt work this nicely with direct screencaps of what they put on the market nowadays. (Not saying it's a bad thing. I am anxiously waiting for Fable 3 for PS3.)

Found here. It appears to be on sale, too.

Romantic Goth: 'Ambroisée' Gown at Rose Mortem

This whole look is quite endearing, and ethereal in a very successful way which is no small stunt to pull. Not completely convinced of the mention of this being a wedding gown specifically, but then again, that particular are is definitely my forte. It is, perhaps, a little bit hard to imagine this dress in a context other than posing and looking good. But that's what a lot of goths do most of the time, anyway, right?

Alternative Accessories: 'Escape Artist Tie' at Clockwork Couture

It is NaNoWriMo time again, dear people, and I am already feeling the pressure of spewing out nearly two thousand words each day. Because I really cannot make this blog part of the novel, I shall be forced to keep the writing at minimum. To compensate, I will post nearly every day.
This tie is a marvellous piece of Steampunk style accessory, although admittedly there are a lot of styles where an adequate level of marvellousness is a lot harder to accomplish. But it's refreshing to see Steampunk being done with something other than cogwheels for a change. Nothing wrong with cogwheels, either, mind you.

Found here. They come in black, green, and brown.
